Mackenzie had no idea if it would work, but was more than willing to try. Clicking musically usually took practice. She and Ian had not had any—not including their impromptu session at his house, where he had done all the work while she admired him.

Yet there was no denying the chemistry between them in other areas. So why couldn’t it work here, too, if only for a onetime performance? Stranger things had happened. They just might bring down the house.

The alternative was not an option. She certainly didn’t want to disappoint her fans by canceling the second session, even if many would surely understand that sometimes stuff happened. It was no one’s fault that Dorian was ill and unable to carry on.

It was great that Ian was willing to take a crack at it and give it his all to fill in for Dorian. This made Mackenzie appreciate having him in her life all the more—even if things didn’t work out.

In the meantime, she was worried about her regular pianist and hoped that his illness didn’t linger.

Mackenzie gazed at Ian, who had made himself comfortable at the piano. Ian was resplendent in a gray herringbone sport coat over a silk-blend black shirt and ivory pleated slacks.

“Are you ready?” she whispered, feeling the butterflies.

Ian flashed a confident smile. “Let’s put on a show the folks won’t soon forget!”

Mackenzie’s eyes crinkled and she readied herself on stage. “Hello, everybody,” she said sweetly. “Thank you for sticking around. You may or may not have noticed that my regular piano man is no longer in his familiar spot. Unfortunately Dorian has fallen prey to the flu bug, which I’m sure some of you can relate to.” She sighed. “The good news is that we have a stand-in pianist who should be able to get the job done without missing a beat. I’d like to introduce you to Ian Kelly. If the name sounds at all familiar, it just may be because he’s the host of a very popular jazz show on Cheri Village’s own KRDQ. Won’t you give him a warm welcome.”

The audience cheered wildly, and Ian seemed slightly taken aback as he stood and gave a bow, before blowing kisses. The last one was directed at Mackenzie, landing right on her lips, she imagined.

She beamed and went over in her mind the songs they would tackle. They had agreed to do four songs that Ian had a good handle on. “We’re going to get started with a classic by any standard, no pun intended. It’s called, ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me.’”

Mackenzie made eye contact with Ian as her pulse raced with nervous tension. On cue he began playing and she moved right into her powerful vocals to the song. Though she detected a couple of missteps in their coordination, Mackenzie doubted the audience noticed in any way. Soon they were in good rhythm and she gained confidence. She and Ian could actually pull this off as though paired together for years.
